ROC Wins Gold in Mixed Doubles Tennis at Tokyo Olympics
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Rublev Top Compatriots for Title
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Rublev of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) have won the gold medal in the mixed doubles tennis event at the Tokyo Olympics. The ROC pair defeated compatriots Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev in the final 6-3, 6-7 (5), 5-7, 13-11 on Saturday.
Pavlyuchenkova and Rublev's victory is the ROC's first gold medal in mixed doubles tennis at the Olympics. It is also Pavlyuchenkova's second Olympic medal, after she won a silver medal in singles at the 2016 Rio Olympics. For Rublev, it is his first Olympic medal.
Vesnina and Karatsev took home the silver medal, while the bronze medal went to Ashleigh Barty and John Peers of Australia. Barty and Peers defeated Nina Stojanovic and Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the bronze medal match 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
The mixed doubles tennis event at the Tokyo Olympics was held from July 28 to August 1. Sixteen teams competed in the event, which was played in a single-elimination format.
Pavlyuchenkova and Rublev's victory is a major upset, as Vesnina and Karatsev were the top seeds in the tournament. However, the ROC pair played well throughout the tournament, and they deserved their victory.
