George Santos Expelled from House of Representatives
Embattled Congressman Faces Ethics Violations
Alleged Fabrications and Criminal Charges
Less than a year after his election to the U.S. House of Representatives, New York Republican George Santos has been expelled due to a litany of alleged fabrications and criminal charges, including counts of campaign finance violations, extortion, and obstruction of justice.
According to a blistering ethics report by the House Committee on Ethics, Santos is accused of fabricating his resume and making false statements about his education, work history, and personal life. He is also facing criminal charges related to an alleged pyramid scheme and campaign finance violations.
Santos initially denied the allegations but later pleaded guilty to one count of campaign finance fraud. He has maintained his innocence on the remaining charges and has vowed to appeal the House's decision to expel him.
The expulsion of Santos marks a rare occurrence in American politics and underscores the seriousness of the allegations against him. It is the first expulsion of a member of Congress since 2019, when Democrat Katie Hill was removed for an inappropriate relationship with a staffer.
