Elvis Costello and Diana Krall: How loss shaped their music and marriage

The British-born, Canadian-raised singer-songwriter and the five-time Grammy-winning jazz pianist have been married for 15 years. In a rare joint interview, they open up about how loss has shaped their music and their relationship.

As a married couple who hail from Britain and Canada but live in New York it was perhaps fitting that Elvis Costello and Diana Krall should meet at a music festival in Italy. They were both performing at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia in 2002 when they were introduced by a mutual friend. "I was immediately struck by her beauty and her intelligence," says Costello. "And she was a great singer too." Krall was equally impressed with Costello. "He's so articulate and funny," she says. "And he's a brilliant songwriter."

They started dating soon after and were married in 2003. They have two sons, Dexter and Frank. Costello has two older children from his previous marriage to Cait O'Riordan. Krall has been open about her struggles with depression and anxiety. In 2005, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy and is now cancer-free.

Costello has also been open about his own struggles with addiction and depression. In 2015, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He underwent surgery and radiation therapy and is now cancer-free as well.

Through all of their ups and downs, Costello and Krall have supported each other through it all. They have also found solace in their music.
